“We have a lot of room to cover, I think we—”
I cut off my idiot brother, “I swear, if you say we should split up, my boot is going up your ass.”
He rolls his eyes at me. “You’re so dramatic. We’ll be fine.”
“Xan, I can hear them, a lot of them. They’re here. I don’t know where exactly, but there’s so many of them.”
Xan frowns at me and looks a little hurt, making this face he knows I hate. And I know he’s doing it on purpose because he always does this to me when I don’t agree with him.
I sigh because I know I’m about to give in. “Fine.”
His face lights up immediately, and I narrow my eyes. He was so faking it a second ago.
“I’ll go right, you go left.”
“Fine. Ato’s going with you, right?”
Xan looks to his right, then back at me. “Yep, he’ll stick with me.”
I nod and walk down the hall away from my brother. Once he’s out of earshot, I turn my camera off and whisper, “Are you with me, Ballard?” I don’t normally seek him out, but it would be nice to know that someone friendly is around. When I don’t get a reply, my frown deepens. It isn’t a good sign if the other ghosts are still scaring him away.
I try to think of something to shake the jitters away, and the first thing that pops in my head is Zyler’s smile, and a little weird flutter happens in my chest. “Fucking hell.” I sigh and lift my camera, turning it back on and scanning my surroundings.
“So here we are in the creepiest fucking place I’ve ever seen, and my idiot brother decides he wants to split up. I guess I’m an even bigger idiot since I agreed.”
The buzzing sound of whispers gets a little louder, and I squint against the onslaught of noise. The sound of laughter stands out louder than the other voices, so I turn in that direction and walk down another hallway. I hear a couple of young voices singing a nursery rhyme.
“Ring around the rosies, pocket full of posies.”
I shiver as I follow the voices. “Singing fucking nursery rhymes. Fucking ghosts. They just want to freak you out,” I mutter to myself. “And now I’m talking to myself. Great.”
“Leeeooo.”
I turn toward another voice. Is that Xan or is that another ghost?
“Ashes, ashes.”
I turn again.
“Heeellllppp!”
Where is that coming from? There’s so many voices, I can’t tell.
“Leo!”
“Xan? Is that you?” I yell, but it’s so loud, I can’t even hear my own voice.
“Ring around the rosies!”
Where are they all coming from? I walk to the end of the hall, and the voices get louder and louder until they’re shouting. I can’t take it anymore, so I cover my ears with my hands.
“What do you want?” I yell over the noise, but they only get louder.
“Ashes, ashes, we all fall down!”
I pull out my bag of salt (we always have pouches or salt and herbs when we're ghost hunting) and quickly pour out a circle around myself, but it does nothing to help with the noise.
